FOGF March Update

Dear Grant Football Family and Friends

We are excited to start preparing for the 2023 season. Over the last month our coaching staff has been evaluating our previous season. Our reflection and evaluation process has allowed us to refine the Grant Football experience in a positive way. We believe that providing the student athletes meaningful interactions on and off the field are a key ingredient to program success. What does program success look like? There are the obvious measurables everyone thinks about. Although wins, losses, championships, and other recognition are nice we have shifted our focus to providing experiences that enrich and grow Grant Football culture. We believe that when a positive culture is at the forefront then the wins and losses take care of themselves.

As we continue to prepare for the 2023 season we will be offering many different experiences that will establish a culture that drives expectations and beliefs. Grant is striving to build a culture that is rooted in Character Development, Connection, and Dedication. We have identified these components among others as key factors to building a culture where students, parents, coaches, and other stakeholders are “All In”.

Below you will find a calendar that outlines these experiences all the way to the start of school next September. Please review the calendar so you can make plans moving forward. It cannot be stressed enough that our student athletes care and invest in the refined culture of Grant Football. To do that they need to be present whenever possible. As always there will be schedule conflicts especially when it's time to travel or when playing multiple sports. We ask that the students keep the coaching staff (Coach Melson) informed on whereabouts and potential conflicts.

Highlighted events include:

Football Leadership Committee

It is important that student athletes get multiple opportunities to develop their leadership skills on and off the field. The leadership committee will allow students to take active roles within the football program while developing positive skills in the process. The leadership committee aims to empower our students to lead by taking time to hone impactful leadership skills through workshop opportunities.. Players interested in assuming captain positions or being included in decision making must be a part of the leadership committee to be considered.

Moms Night

The Grant Football is always looking to grow our football family. The only way to do this is to increase participation.. Understandably some families may have some reserves of their student athletes participating in full contact sports. We often run into the excuse from students “My mom won’t let me!” Mom’s night is geared toward providing information and answering questions about the sport of Football. Whether you are a part of the youth or high school program we encourage you to join us to break down safety stigmas of football participation.

Youth Clinics

This offseason Grant Football will strive to provide more opportunities for our youth athletes to build their skills and aspects of culture. Youth clinics are a great way for our students to get out of the house and have some fun while building skills and relationships with teammates and coaches. Stay tuned for more information as there will be a series of youth clinics starting in April.

Spring Ball

We are about 100 days away from the start of 2023 Spring Football. Eligible student athletes will engage in two weeks of padded and non padded practices leading up to finals. These practices are an opportunity for student athletes to hone fundamentals and get evaluated for Summer Development. Springball will include two college campus experiences. U of O day Camp and 7v7 Tournament, and Western Oregon Team Camp. These activities are usually some of the most talked about experiences of our season for students.

Beach Retreat

This year we will have our inaugural annual Beach Retreat. The Beach Retreat is a bonding opportunity for the players to become more connected and build aspects of team and culture. We will spend 3 days and 2 Nights in Warrenton, Oregon at Warrenton High-School. More details about Beach Retreat coming.

U of O Lineman + Skills Day Camp

This will be the second year that we take a group down to Eugene,OR. The U of O 7v7 and Lineman Skills Challenge was one of the highlighted experiences of the year last season. Skill players will compete in a 7v7 tournament during the day as well as the lineman in a skills challenge. Players will also get the opportunity to tour U of O’s state of the art facilities, as well as meet players and coaches. This is a great opportunity to get on a college campus and get a taste of what collegiate sports are like.

Team Calendars (March-June)

Summer calendars July-August will be updated Here soon.

Moda Center Parking lot

We have been given an amazing opportunity to manage event parking at a Moda Center area parking lot and the funds go to Grant Football. The Youth and High School Friends of Grant Football Board members have been running the lot this winter, but we now need additional volunteers. Please e-mail Stephanie at admin@friendsofgrantfootball.com if you are interested in volunteering. Each volunteer shift is 1.5-2hrs.

FOGF September Update

Happy September!

We are excited to wrap up fall camp session and kick of the 22’ football season this week. The team has spent the last two weeks practicing and preparing to represent our program families and community. I am excited to start the next chapter in our journey as we gear up for another school year. Please see below for camp recaps and important upcoming dates and information.

August Recap

Youth Camp

Thank you to our Grant Youth Families for attending this year youth camp in the bowl. We were able to host more than 50 youth athletes who spent 4 days learning football fundamentals and techniques. Bridging the gap between our two programs is a top priority for me as a head coach. These opportunities allow us to build and strengthen relationship between current a future Generals. We look forward to continuing to support the youth program in their season and development this season.

Fall Camp

Fall camp begun on August 15th for more than 75 Grant Student Athletes. This has been one of the most productive fall camps I have witnessed in the last 8 years that I have been coaching at Grant. The student athletes have been able to spark a culture shift that is centered around hard work, discipline, and accountability. It is the foundation that has been laid during this camp that will determine our success and failures as a team. I am excited to build on top of the foundation they have laid as a unit.

Fall camp concluded with our first opportunity for competition with the PIL Jamboree. The Generals had a successful “dress rehearsal” against opponents Franklin and Lincoln. The General’s offense was able to generate 5 touchdowns while keeping opposing offenses to just 1 score. A highlight of the jamboree was the number of different players who were able to play and contribute to overall team success.

The lower level team shared similar success in their own jamboree on Saturday. Their ability to execute and compete was great to see. Looking forward to seeing this group continue to grow and compete as a unit.

2022 Season

Below you will find important information for the 22 season including schedules (subject to change) and important reminders for families and friends.

Due to the shortage of officials there will be some untraditional changes to the Varsity and JV schedules. Our first Varsity contest will be played in the Grant Bowl September 1st at 4:15.

There will be limited bleacher seated. Bringing your own chair is highly recommended.

Admission: $6 for Adults, $2 for students with ID

FOGF August Update

Dear Grant Football Family and Friends;

As moratorium week comes to an end and we transition to August we hope you have had the opportunity to spend time with your family and loved ones. Football activities will be resuming this upcoming week (Aug 1). Please see below about upcoming events and important dates to highlight on your calendar.

July Highlights

Summer workouts

The High School and Youth programs have both put in a tremendous amount of hard work on the field and in the weight room over the last few weeks of the summer. It has been a great experience for the staff to get to know new and familiar faces within the youth program. Even more importantly it has been a great opportunity to strengthen the connection between the two programs and create a more cohesive and inclusive environment. We look forward to continued success as we engage in the last weeks of summer training.

Lineman Challenge

Summer is often filled with a lot of opportunities for skill players to compete with other schools over the course of the summer. Oftentimes this means that our interactions with our lineman can be limited to just in person workouts on campus. One of the few opportunities that this group gets to engage in is the lineman challenge. This year we took a group of lineman to compete in the Union Titans Annual Lineman Challenge in Camas Washington. In this event our student athletes got to represent our program by competing in different events against other schools. These events include 8 man sled relay, Bench Press, Tire Flip Relay, Farmers Carry, Figure 8 hoops, and Tug of War. This was a great opportunity for us to compete and continue to build aspects of teamwork and cohesiveness. The Generals took 2nd overall just missing the 1st place mark by half a point. This only sheds light on the type of athletes we have and the potential they can reach this season. I am looking forward to watching these young men compete on and off the field.

Shout out to Gabriel’s Bakery!

The Generals want to extend a huge thank you to Gabriel’s Bakery for supplying the student athletes with a meal after summer workouts. These were some of the softest bagels I have had in a long time. Be sure to check them out here

Important Dates in August

Summer workouts

Summer workouts will resume the week of August 1 in The Bowl. Tuesday and Thursday are still open for youth athletes who can attend. This will conclude the youth sessions for our young Generals. During the week of the 8th we will complete the end of the summer training for highschool athletes.

Youth Camp

The Highschool staff and athletes will host our Annual Youth Camp the week of the 8th. Camp will be from Monday through Thursday in The Bowl from 4pm until 6pm. This is a great opportunity to get our youth athletes prepared for their season while getting the opportunity to learn the Grant Generals Brand of Football. Electronic Registration forms (preferred method) are available here. You can also register on site prior to camp start time. Camp fee is $30 per athlete (scholarship funds may be available but are limited.) Please make checks payable to Friends of Grant Football. Registration and check in table will be available 45 minutes before the beginning of camp. On the last day of camp there will be a BBQ for camp participants and workers.

Fall Camp

Highschool Fall camp will begin on August 15th. For athletes who are registered and cleared practice will begin at 4pm in The Bowl. Please make sure that you or your student athlete is cleared for participation. Those who are registered but not yet fully cleared should have received an email from our athletic office with next steps for clearance. If you are not sure if you or your athlete is cleared you can check with the AD office or with Coach Melson. Those who are not fully cleared by the 15th will not be allowed to participate in practice or check out gear. Follow this link to register your student athletes. For athletes who have not gotten the opportunity to check out gear they can do gear check Aug 15th  from 1-2:30 on campus. Fall camp will conclude with the PIL Jamboree on the 26th of August. Details still to come.

Opening Game

We are extremely excited to be able to host our first home game of the season in The Bowl against the Newberg Tigers! This game has been moved up to Thursday September 2nd (Due to official shortage) at 4:15pm. This is a unique experience for both the players and the community, it will be an event that you don't want to miss! You can find our full season schedule here on the OSAA website.

Remembering Alex Castagnoli

The Grant Football Family and Community are saddened to learn of the passing of fellow General Alex Castagnoli. Alex was a bright light within our program and community. He will be missed by his coaches, teammates, mentors and teachers within the Grant community. If you knew Alex you knew he had a contagious smile and a genuine personality. Alex’s funeral will be held at Little Chapel of the Chimes on Aug 6th from 12pm - 4pm.

SnapRaise fundraiser is starting in August!

We are making preparations for the season and have partnered with SnapRaise to be our fundraising platform. At this time, our hope is that this campaign will be highly successful and the only fundraiser where we need our student athletes participation. Our goal is that this campaign will generate enough funds to cover our costs for the entire season. In late August players will be learning more about this fundraiser. Below are more details:

Message from Coach Melson

Dear Grant Football Family and Friends

As the weather turns I hope you are enjoying the sun and enjoying time with your loved ones. Our spring ball session is coming to an end this week. I am excited that our student athletes were given the opportunity to participate in Spring Ball practice as well as the WOU Team football camp. These are the experiences that lay the foundation of a season of success on and off the field. Forty of our student athletes were able to attend camp this year. They got to engage in skill development with college coaches and athletes on a college campus. Aside from football specific elements we were also able to engage in team bonding and building activities. Some camp highlights included 4 of our student athletes who were recognized by making the All Camp Team list:

Zamani Harris - Muldrew: Defensive line

Chuck Bohart: Offensive Line

Jayden Moses: Linebacker/Tightend

Milan Clark: Defensive MVP

We look forward to continuing the tradition of team camp next year hopefully doubling attendance and participation. It is truly an experience that players will remember for years and years to come and can be a catalyst for team success.

There is one activity left on the schedule that will conclude our Spring Session. This Friday (6/24) our Varsity members have been invited to the University of Oregon to compete in a 7v7 competition. Our athletes will get the opportunity to tour the U of O campus and meet campus staff and team personnel. This is a great opportunity for players to get in front of coaches and play inside one of the premiere collegiate football venues Autzen Stadium. Those who are participating should have received information about the competition and visit. Special thanks to Friends of Grant Football sponsoring our student athletes in this event.

As the month of July approaches I want to make sure you are reminded about the important dates and deadlines.

Summer workouts for highschool student athletes will begin next Monday June 27th at 8:30. We will meet every week Monday - Thursday on the turf at 8:30 ending around 10:30.

Youth Athletes will join us every Tuesday and Thursday starting the week of July 4th. Youth athletes should be signed up with their program. Athletes who are living in a dual enrollment boundary with Jefferson will have to be released from the Jefferson cluster to participate with Grant or will automatically be enrolled with the Jefferson Youth Cluster. I am waiting for more information about this process.

Our High School 7v7 schedule will start the week of July 4th as well. Please refer to the summer calendar for updates and locations. Times and locations are subject to change and I will keep you updated if things change.

Ice Cream Social: We will be hosting a 7v7 competition in the Grant Bowl on July 12th at 6pm. At the end of this competition we will be hosting an Ice Cream social for all players and families on the youth and Highschool level. This will be a great opportunity to meet coaches and players, ask questions and mingle with the Grant community. There will also be an informational agenda for youth participants and families. Please mark this event on your calendars.

Moratorium Week is the week of July 27th. There will be no activities or contact this week per OSAA rules. WE will resume with the schedule the week after.

Youth Camp will take place the week of August 8th. (More details to follow)

One of my goals this year is that we maximize participation in our program. I have a goal of reaching at least 90 participants this year in our program. Currently we have 60 signed up. If we can reach this goal we can get back to having three true levels of football at Grant. This will give our players the most opportunities to play and develop having all three levels. Please register if you have not done so already. There is a big need for incoming freshmen to register as we need to anticipate scheduling and coaching needs. If you know anyone who may be on the fence or thinking about registering, have them reach out to me ASAP. Links for registration and clearance will be included in this email.

Youth Update:

Youth registration is open and we have some exciting news for the 3rd-8th graders to get prepared for the fall season.  Coach Melson is opening up the high school summer workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30am-10:30am at Grant Bowl for youth players, starting Tuesday July 5th!  These workouts are non-contact and focused on speed, agility, and fundamentals.  This is a great opportunity to get the kids moving in the morning, as well as spend time with the Grant High School players and coaching staff.  I would like to emphasize the importance of registering for youth football EARLY - do not wait until July and August.  Many youth programs close registration after May as it is important to know how many players you have for proper season preparation - equipment, coaches, etc.  We will leave registration open as long as reasonably possible, but we certainly do not want to have to push players to other districts because we already have enough for 1 team but not quite 2 in a certain division.   So please get on it!

Youth Registration is open. Please help us spread the word by emailing this to any Friends and Family, social media, neighborhood or cluster school organizations you belong to.

https://www.grantyouthfootball.com/

We really need help staffing the Youth Program. You may have more fun than you think, coaching little kids!  Or coaching adults to coach little kids, or being in charge of it all! :)

Go Generals,

Trent

Big Congrats to long time Grant High School Football and Track and Field Coach, Eric von Arx for receiving the honors of Assistant Coach of the Year, from the State of Oregon Athletic Coaches Association. We have been fortunate to have him as a part of our athletes lives and are very proud to have him as a part of the fantastic coaching staff at Grant. Thanks for Everything Coach Eric!

FOGF May Update

Happy Spring, Generals!
We’ve been eagerly awaiting word of our new head coach and are so excited to announce the hiring of Alex Melson as the new Head Football Coach of Grant High School! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Melson played defensive back at Western Oregon University from 2008 through 2012 and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science and a Minor in Health.  During his time as a student-athlete at Grant, he was a two sport athlete, where he earned All-City and All-State honors in Football. This past school year, he was hired at Grant to teach in the health and PE department.

Alex and his family are excited to continue their work within the Grant community and look forward to building on the rich tradition of Grant football while strengthening partnerships within the community.

Announcing
New Head Coach
Alex Melson!

Alex is a Grant alum with 8 years of coaching experience starting back in 2014 at Grant, and was the defensive coordinator the last 4 seasons at Grant.

Message from Coach Melson

Dear Generals Nation,

I am honored to be named the next Head Football Coach at Grant High School. It has been a privilege to be a part of the Football program for the last 18 years as a player and coach. I have experienced first hand the lessons that can be afforded to student-athletes through athletics and specifically football. These experiences have provided a framework for myself and others to learn and grow as positive members of society.

This new role will allow me to continue my mission in providing positive and impactful experiences for the student athletes from all demographics in the Grant community. I look forward to building on the foundation that has been laid by past players, coaches, and alumni who have put their blood, sweat, and tears into the rich culture here at Grant Highschool.

There is a lot of work ahead as we try to establish a new culture and approach to the game. I am excited to lead that effort with the support of my staff, school/community members, parents, and all supporters of Grant High School Athletics. As long as we continue to focus on the meaningful experiences we provide for our student athletes we will continue to experience success on and off the field.

Thankyou for your warm welcome and thank you for your support. The future is promising for Grant Football and together we will ensure that the next chapter will be one to remember.

Thank you Coach Beck for 4 awesome years of service and dedication to the Grant High School Football program, you will be missed!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Special announcement-

Friends of Grant football has learned that after four very successful years with the Grant Generals, Coach John Beck is stepping down as Head Coach of Grant Football. We thank Coach Beck for his tremendous leadership and dedication to the program and all Grant students.

Coach Beck brought 40 years of coaching experience to the student-athletes at Grant High School and has had incredible success as the Head Football Coach. The Generals attained a 15-2 in-league record during his tenure. Even more remarkable than his winning record is the positive difference he has made in the lives of countless young students at Grant High School.

This announcement follows the Grants Generals’ 4th consecutive year as PIL football champions, becoming the first school in PIL history to be named champion four years in a row! We are saddened to see Coach Beck go on the heels of this great accomplishment and thank him for the progress and passion he brought to the program. We sincerely wish Coach Beck the best in his future endeavors.

PPS will announce the new head football coach for the Grant Generals in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for announcements and updates. Friends of Grant Football will continue to support the program, students, and coaches into this new and exciting future.

Coach Becks Update:

Dear Players - Parents - Coaches and Community Members

Here is some information and updates before we head into March and spring break.

We have had about half of our returning players stop in for their football evaluations - players and parents please make sure we take care of this sooner rather than later. :)  We still do not have all players involved in off-season physical development (i.e. - lifting - agility drills - speed work, etc.). Just having weights in your garage or basement or going to lift at a gym on your own is not what we are looking for. Players "should" be in either speed-strength (Beck's class) class, or working with Coach Melson (MSP) or at the very least participating consistently in early bird (6:45 - 8 a.m. M-W-F) football workouts with Coaches Millage and Dyer. Proper training reduces the chance for injury and "owies" during a sports season. Continuing with this training "in-season" is also very important. Given this...we also understand because of the potential limitations to transportation and our school not offering training to freshmen (other than PE) - this need is tough to do for some. However...if it is important - people usually "find a way" if possible.

We will be having a Senior player meeting soon to get everyone on the same page heading into the spring. If a player is not playing baseball (we have the best baseball program in the state!)...then we really want to encourage them to participate in track and field. A player will get the very best training to further their physical development. (All players still playing football in college from Grant HS in the last four years all have participated in track!).  Besides track - there are opportunities in LaCrosse and Rugby in the spring as well. We want players competing in multiple sports in the spring.

*Winter visits by college staff to high schools are over...but we have quite a few scheduled visits in the spring to watch our players participate in spring practices (late May to June).

*Look for info on a Spring "Signing Day" coming soon for incoming 8th graders and Grant Youth players.

*The summer 7-7 schedule and Lineman challenges are starting to take shape.

*Good news! We heard from our district that we will be allowed to participate in a team camp and a retreat (overnight)!  More information on that is coming soon. (Cost of Team Camp is approximately $235-$250).

*Good luck to our Basketball players and Wrestlers heading into the playoffs - District and State competitions!

Grant Youth Football Update-

Grant Youth Football needs YOUR help!! We are looking for coaches and assistant coaches for the 2022 season.  GYF is looking at a substantial increase in participation in 2022 and may be adding a JV (7th grade) team, in addition to the 8th grade team.  Woohoo!!! The current 6th grade class appears to be doing a really great job recruiting friends for this coming season. Having two teams at this level will ensure more playing time for all.   If you have interest in helping coach, or know someone who might, please reach out to youth president, Trent Carpenter at  (503) 781-8833.

Last, but certainly not least- everyone's favorite subject- fundraising! Friends of Grant Football is looking for new businesses’ to partner with for this coming Football season. If your business, or another business you know,  is looking to support our Generals while getting the added benefit of fabulous marketing (thanks to our awesome live stream crew) reach out to Nikki at 503-750-4094. We can develop a marketing plan that brings success to both parties.

Coach Beck’s update:

Dear Parents and Players:

Congratulations to our two All-State Football Players!
Senior, Max von Arx - OLB
Junior, Jayden Moses - ILB

We have had quite a few of our players working hard in Rugby, Wrestling and Basketball this winter. Participating in multiple sports is a key element in a player's development. All of our returning lineman starters are wrestling for example. The sacrifice and dedication will pay big dividends next season.

We have had a number of schools stop in and visit our campus so far this year or are scheduled to make a visit: UCLA / Oregon State University / Western Oregon University / Central Washington University / Weber State University / Southern Oregon University / Whitworth University / Lewis and Clark University and Pacific University.

Players are reminded to work hard on their academics as we inch closer to the end of the semester. If you need help...PLEASE let myself, Coach Melson or Dyer know - and we can find you the support you need.

A shout out also to the younger players that have been working diligently and consistently with Coach Melson after school. You are getting the very best training - it will definitely pay off in your development!

A few players have stopped by to go over their football evaluation. Please stop in and see Coach Beck if you have not done so already. This is for ALL returning players! (Freshmen - Juniors) (There are 12 categories that are evaluated...for example: academics - physicality - dedication - etc.).

We are excited to watch some of our skill guys as they get ready to participate in the annual 7 on 7 circuit competitions. Good luck to those participants!

If a player or parent has any questions - please contact me.

Grant Youth Football Update-

Grant Youth Football needs your help! We are looking for coaches for the upcoming season. We are expecting an increase in numbers after a successful 2021 season and hope to add a JV team (7th grade) as well. We are looking for head coaches and assistant coaches. Additional administrative positions are available as well. Please contact Trent Carpenter, GYF President. trent.carpenter.gyfootball@gmail.com or 503-781-8833 for more information!

Grant Football- Banquet success, Coach Codys Birthday + more!

What a turn out! On Monday we were able to host our annual Football Awards banquet, honoring our 83 Varsity & JV athletes. It takes some work to put on an event like this, but we believe it is well worth the effort to honor these young men who have worked so hard this season! We would like to thank the parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, students, athletes, coaches and more who took the time to attend the event. A special thank you to Noho’s Hawaiian Cafe for donating dinner for all 200+ attendees!

Check out the video that was played at the banquet! 🤩

A message from Karmen & Eric Von Arx:

It’s so bittersweet to be writing my last note to the Football Program. A few years ago Eric and I were talking to some friends about our experience with inner city High School sports. They had an impression of what it might be like, and they couldn’t have been more off. We have loved our experiences with the families and players and all the excitement that football brings with it. It’s a sport that welcomes all levels of different skills to play. Any and all shapes and sizes come together. It really is such a great uniter. Add the diversity of our student athletes and you have a fantastic learning ground for acceptance and camaraderie. I am grateful for the coaches, the board and the parents of our players that are raising such fine young men. We feel lucky my son had the experience to play with all of them. My husband has loved coaching these kids (more than you know!)  and I have especially loved being a part of all the goings on for the team and with the board who I will miss terribly. Many big wishes for Grants Football future success that are bound to happen.

Our most sincerest thanks to you all,

Karmen and Eric von Arx.

We’re all going to miss Karmen & Eric Von Arx! They’ve given tremendously throughout the years to the program and our athletes. Their presence will be missed. 🥺

A message from Coach Beck:

Dear Parents and Players:

Returning players please remember to schedule a time to meet with Coach Beck to go over your player evaluation. These evaluations give players areas that they excelled in, and one's they may need to improve upon. General goal setting and clear pathways are explained. Getting players to where they would like to go and understanding the way to get there is important. So is having the player understand what they need to do for the improvement of the team is just as if not more valuable. The player-coach meeting is where a player can be honest, and so can the coach in a private one on one setting. This empowers the player so he knows working together with the coaching staff is the key to a high level of achievement.

If there is ever a question from a player or parent...or a community member...please reach out to me.

CALENDAR

December - February - College Recruiters will be visiting campus to talk to prospects.

January - The year-round calendar will be out sometime in the month of January for all players and parents so they can plan vacations, etc.

January - February - Player Evaluations will be underway...one on one with the head coach.

February - Every returning football player and Seniors playing in College "should" be enrolled in Speed-Strength class for the second semester...don't take "no" as an adequate answer. :)

February - College Signings for Senior Players

February - May - Players will be participating if invited to develop their skills on the 7-7 circuit.

March-May - Players should be participating in Track-Field if not participating in baseball - that is the expectation!

March - Team Camp information will be sent out to players and parents. (Start Saving money - cost is around $235-250).

March - May - Coaches will be attending Coaching Clinics and College Spring Practices.

May - Spring Football Practice - non padded.

June - Padded Practice and Team Camp (10 days consecutively)

June - July - 7 on 7 (Skill Players) for all levels on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some weekend Tournaments / Summer workouts: Monday-Thursdays (8-10:30 a.m.) for ALL Players / Lineman Competitions (2) / Les Schwab All-Star Bowl @ Linfield College

July - Team Bonding Camp Overnight Trip (More information in April)

August - Youth Football Camp / Youth Coaches Clinic / Training Camp Week for High School Players prior to the start of the season / Start of Official Season

Generals:

We need to get stronger and physically and mentally. There are ways to achieve this...but they might be out one's "comfort zone". Participating in combative sports like "Wrestling" and Rugby and Lacrosse. Participating in Track to develop your athleticism - jumping...and speed! These sports are not easy...but...nothing worthwhile is achieved easily.

Take a look at the best players at the college and the NFL level...it is not a secret...that to get to that level takes sacrifice by players and even parents.  (If a student-athlete is interested in gaining a potential college scholarship (tough to come by)...they are limited in a lot of sports...however football has by far the most scholarships.)

There is a place for every player...a roll for every player...the "Life Lessons" learned are so valuable...keep recruiting - the more participants - the better. :)

Coaches Gifts:

We are hoping it has just slipped your mind as we have only received a few donations for coaches gifts. Please keep in mind that although the coaches are paid, the amount of time that they put in, no where near reflects what they should be getting. Coaching is a labor of love to these kids. We have 11 coaches and 2 honorary special needs coaches that come to every practice and game. All players are taught by the majority of coaches so we add all the gift donations together and divide equally. Please also keep in mind that this has been a VERY busy year for them. They started last October-April was one season and started back up in July until November.

With a pandemic, Portland Public schools made great strides to make sure our players were able to play last season.  Having two seasons in one year made it difficult to find the complete support that we needed without hitting our families too hard for donations. We were generously given gift certificates to raffle off by the Moxie Hotel downtown. Instead of doing a raffle for money we’re going to offer up a fun weekend experience for 2,  for two nights, with a bottle of wine and $25 towards food and beverage and a complementary cocktail at check-in. This is for anyone to win that gives us a great contact to become a potential sponsor. All you have to do is email us with a business in our Grant Community with a name and number, along your name and number and we will do the rest!

New Youth Football President!

We are excited to announce our new Youth Football President Trent Carpenter. He is exactly what we have been looking for with great ties to the young football community. We know he will be fantastic!

Trent grew up in Lake Oswego and attended Washington State University, graduating in 1998.  He was involved in a variety of youth sports and began playing football in 3rd grade, and played through high school.  Playing youth football was an important part of my childhood, and was fortunate to have great coaches who focused on the fundamentals of the game, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

He met his wife Hillary at WSU, and they have two boys, Bronx and Pierce, 5th and 6th grade at Beverly Clearly.  He owns his own company which provides cutting systems for the forest products industry, and Hillary is an event planner.  They have lived in Northeast Portland since 2011, with a 3 year ex-pat stint in Chile from 2014-2016. Their family enjoys typical Northwest activities - hiking, skiing at Bachelor, and visiting local restaurants and breweries.

Many, many thanks to Josh Haley and Eric von Arx for stepping in to make sure the season happened this year for our young ones when our last president stepped down at the last minute.

Many More Thanks

One of the things that makes football special is the amount of people and pageantry it takes to make it happen. For a team to play we have-

-75 players
-13 coaches.
-1 Athletic Director
-1 Asst Director
-1 groundsKeeper
-3+ security
-3+ Administration
-2 ticket takers
-2 bus drivers
-1 announcer
-1 spotter
-1 scoreboard
-4 chains Crew
-4 refs
-2 trainers
-1 on field doctor
-3 parents for meal
-3 filmers for Hudl
-4+ for live stream crew
-1+ photographer
-12 board members
-And a partridge in a pear tree!

We are grateful for all the wonderful souls that keep the love of football alive in a time where doing something for someone besides yourself, gets harder and harder to find. Thank you.

We get asked a lot about Grant Gear. It can be bought in the school by your student, but stuff is limited due to shortages this year everywhere and trucking delivery issues. There is an embroidery cart next to the rock at Lloyd center that we paid to have the G and Stars logo available. You can take anything you want to have it embroidered on for a small fee.

Many thanks for a great year!

Please try to get there early. We won’t be able to wait. Feel free to bring banners or balloons for your playe. When seniors are announced we will have a photographer there that will take photos of your family with your player.

We would like Parents or Guardians to send us a letter that can be read by the announcer (live stream and game) when your player is on the field. This is needed ASAP.

  3. How long he has been playing football.

Enter to win Hotel Moxy Raffle!!
Cost?? Sponsorship contacts!

Email us at admin@friendsgrantfootballboard.com

Contact info for businesses that you think would be a good sponsor with their

  1. contact name and number

  2. your name in the number.

For every contact name given you will be entered to win!

Thanks again. Go General’s!!

Grant Football showed their fortitude and worked hard for the win against Roosevelt. We had lots of Players out and lots of Players that stepped up. Great Job Generals!

PPS has New Covid-19 Vaccination Requirements of Spectators
- PPS is now requiring all "visitors", including those attending athletic events, show proof of vaccination OR a negative test result within the past 72 hours.  The message was sent out throughout the district on Thursday and I am still working on some more identifying language specifically around our students attending our games.  For the remainder of the fall season this will take place at all Volleyball and Football home games, for soccer, since we play varsity games off site or at Grant Park, we will not be able to manage that.  I do expect it to happen at soccer games on PPS campuses.  They are not yet sure if the same requirement will be in place for the students.

The Grant High athletic website is trying to be more up to date weekly with all necessary information for the community to know for our program. You can still always check FOGF site and OSAA for current game info!

(Grant Gear may change. Will let you know)

Vax card info needs to be turned in.

Just in case there were any issues the first time we were asked to put Vax cards on synergy. This will be vital as administrators look up vaccination status.

1) Upload your student's Covid-19 Vaccination Cards into Synergy-ParentVUE.
This is helpful for contact tracing.

Instructions: Covid 19 Vaccination card -parentvue.

The option for parents to upload their student’s Covid 19 Vaccination Card in the ParentVUE is available in the Yearly Verification screen.

To access ParentVUE, in your web browser, go to: https://parent-portland.cascadetech.org/portland/

Click on I am a Parent to log into ParentVUE. Enter your username and password. Click Login.

On the Select Registration page, select 2021-22 Current Year- Yearly Verification from the drop down menu.

Click on the Begin New Student Registration link.

In Yearly Verification, parents will be able to update their student information and upload their Covid Vaccination Card. Click the Upload button to proceed.

This information will be added to your student’s immunization record in the Synergy Student Information System.

If you have already updated your student’s information in Yearly Verification, you can  still go back to the Yearly Verification screen  by clicking on Yearly Verification in the upper right hand corner of the ParentVUE screen.  You will be able to upload the Covid 19 Vaccination Record at this time.

For Varsity Football
If you are unsuccessful uploading to Synergy, please email a  pdf or picture of your student's vaccination card to Cynthia Roberts, GHS Business Manager, (croberts@pps.net).  Ms. Roberts will upload it for you.
